Mark Twain was born in 1835. Tom Sawyer is based off of memories of his childhood, so the book takes place in the 1840s, even though it wasn’t published until 1876.

The book takes place in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, which is based off of his childhood home Hannibal, Missouri.

The book was released in England 6 months before being released in the U.S., which Mark Twain believed caused piracy.

In the preface for the book, he states that “[m]ost of the adventures recorded in this book really occurred” either for him or for his friends, and that Tom is “a combination . . . of three boys whom I knew.”

By the time of Mark Twain’s death, it was his best selling book and still is today. One of the stories in it is well known, the whitewashing scene.
