Possible Books: "Legends of the Valley" compiled by Ceadda and Abyll "Equipment from A to Z" by Jargonius the Great "Help, I'm Trapped in a text based Video Game!" by Todd Strasser "So You Want to Name Your Kid?" by The Saurus "The History of the NeeJean" by Hason "How to be Pouty All of the Time" by Hakim "Finding Your Way in This Big Valley We Call Home" by Ceadda "How it All Began" by Abyll "Chronicles of an Organization" by The NeeJean "A Pointless Book Filled with Random Nonsense" by Ceadda
|
I refuse to be part of such a conglamoration as a random and blunt book not filled with non-nonsensical stuff.
But the rest, Genious! (My suggestion, though, is Zutobian <something> for Z, instead of just A to Z.. Maybe Zutobian Diamond Armor, or just some equip from the Zutobu)
And Saurus? Ah, a good friend, he or she was. A good friend..
Who's Mr. Strasser? I've never heard of him. But I guess he has bad English if he forgot to capitalize the whole title of his book. (_Text _Based) Hm, I oughta read it sometime though; it sounds interesting.
and some other typos: I (may) write the book How _it_ all began, not if it began or not, because it did, but "How it all began"
Oh, and books are supposed to be underlined or Italicized.. but I can't edit your post, because the topic is locked; wierd huh? I can post in a locked topic, but I can't edit.
Aßyll - October 8, 2008 06:10 PM (GMT)
I also decided that it would be good to have the webserver, because I want to make another page for my Halo server, concerning rules and the such, And to make things easier from the NM server - that webserver module doesn't work too perfectly, and I don't really want to bother with it anymore.
Actually,... I will have the default web pages, in the Apache server, have a link/ordinary page that will redirect to NM's webserver port to grab the Who or Motd page, with that automatic redirect script, that you see often.
I'll basically have 2 sections of the webserver - one for my halo server, and one for DV.
They won't be correlated or linked at all. In fact, I'll refer Halo friends to my alter domain, abyll.game-host.org, rather than dungeonvalley.game-host.org. Which will give the same ip, ... but they'll redirect differently, to the different folders.
pizza2004 - October 8, 2008 06:17 PM (GMT)
Well, I sort of modified your moderator abillities because I was tired of you splitting topics, if you want them back, then you must agree to not split topics without telling me first.
And if I made any grammatical errors, I am sorry. All of the books are made up, The Saurus comes from an episode of Arthur where DW thinks that the Thesaurus is The Saurus, and Todd Strasser wrote a lot of these 'Help I'm trapped in <insert some sort of thing here (usually bodies, but sometimes days or events)>!' books which are kind of funny, but they are for little kids. And why don't you want your name associated with the book that contains the legends we make up and then compile as if the races themselves made them up?
Sorry about the typos, I'm not sure if I ever sent you this version in an email, it is v1.2 of the Dungeon Valley Information file. We still need to come up with more books, and we need to fix the calendar, and we need to make some sort of public and measurable progress soon.
Edit: NO DOUBLE POSTING ANYMORE!!!
Aßyll - October 8, 2008 06:22 PM (GMT)
I was sorta joking, for most of that.
I lost moderator priveleges? WHY?!! :P
And I could sorta tell that, I was joking about uh, Todd Strasser - I really dont know him, but I know all the books are fake. I recognized The Saurus though.
And I don't want to help with the "big pointless book about nothing", but "Legends of Dungeon Valley" would be good.
But books aren't a big concern yet - We can just make a Book type object sometime eventually, later. It'd be a small object ingame, that just has a title, author(s), and a reference to the lib/books/<thisbook> file that the whole of it would actually be stored in, to keep memory from being taken up too much.
And those 2 posts had nothing to do with each other!! So I can't really combine them!
[second edit] And dont remove stuff like that. Or i WILL double post! What's so bad about double posting anyways??!???
[third edit]
So, is it okay to make a webserver for DV, so making a web page For DV will be easier?
pizza2004 - October 8, 2008 06:32 PM (GMT)
Actually, it doesn't matter if they had nothing to do with each other, the people on the other forum would still have gotten mad at me, it is annoying! I never said you helped with the pointless book, and of course we would have files for the books, they are objects you know, each different object has a file for it, and they would each be a separate object. We would add another type for objects (somehow, and while we are at that, we would need to fix the clothing or something like that because it doesn't work right) called books, and then set it all up. Of course books are way down on the priority list, I think I will work on the inside of the town hall soon, and then the inside rooms on all the other buildings, then we will be finished with the town, and then we can supersede the outdoors for a while and lock everyone inside and just let them explore, although we wouldn't have to.
Edit: Oh, and go to the Autodesk website, and find the MotionBuilder page, and then go to the demonstration page and look at the video that shows some of the new features in MotionBuilder 2009.
Aßyll - October 8, 2008 06:36 PM (GMT)
Who cares about the other forum?? This is a different forum!
And thats great.. Yeah, books will come later, but FIRST is skills and stats and COMBAT!!one!!!!11!!
Oh, did I tell you I registered DV on a MUD listing site? Look at www.mudconnect.com, it's like a huge site for Muds, for admins, builders, players, coders, etc.
If/when we ever get to a point thats far enough, we can go there to ask for more builders/coders for DV. Or we can just look around there for more info. But primarily, there people can read DV's listing and are able to join from there. (Which, by the way, wouldn't be possible without the host name dungeonvalley.game-host.org)
[restrained doublepost, not edit]:
And I don't care too much about motion builder. I wouldn't even know what's awesome about whatever the video shows, and I'm not in 3D design anymore (and won't go back), so it's not very relevant to me.
pizza2004 - October 8, 2008 06:49 PM (GMT)
I know about that, I fixed doHTML, and I tried to make a review, but they thought it wasn't detailed enough, so I just decided I wouldn't.
Please try to make this forum look as professional as possible, and I don't like the double posting, that is what I was saying, it is annoying! The double posting is annoying! Oh, and I got the Xbox 360 Elite yesterday, which came with Lego Indiana Jones, and Kung Fu Panda. I also got Wii Fit, and our television will be fixed today! And it is definitely WHEN, not IF because we will, even if it is not for several years. And I am rather excited about everything, and I really want to make the inside of the town hall. I just thought of something to go in the manual, a map of the town, with any secret areas removed of course, to make it easier to navigate through the various buildings and the such. The admin houses will be omitted, but as far as certain things go, we need some extra rooms in each building, 'any given building must contain at least two public rooms' is now a rule for Dungeon Valley, so the storage room that the mobiles use for their items (like we discussed with the mobile system I suggested) does not count towards the two rooms, I know that a few of the buildings that are in town will be a tad hard to increase, the bank, the store, and the blacksmith have the rule applied, but the rundown shack doesn't need an extra room ;).
So, I will work on making the massive town hall that sits off of the square, it will probably have somewhere between ten and twenty rooms in it (maybe more, up to 100 at most, but probably no more than 50), and probably several stories.
As far as MotionBuilder goes, you would think it is awesome, it has RAGDOLL PHYSICS now!
Edit: Oh, and this 'Edit:' refers not to the fact that you are modifying your message, so much as modifying your post, so you still did an 'Edit:'.
Edit 2: That is part of the beauty of editing, it doesn't have to have anything to do with the rest of the message! Also, before you post, all you need to do is preview the post before you post it to see if there are any new posts, or any edits to old posts, then you can fix your post accordingly.
Aßyll - October 8, 2008 06:58 PM (GMT)
Roflmao… There's this one game video that shows.... Unusual... poses that come about from poorly scripted ragdoll physics. But that's cool.
So you got an Xbox 360? Cool, expensive, and... expensive! (With a little less of the cool.)
And… You're making a Rule for building areas in DV? I don't think we can make many absolute and explicit rules like that… Besides, what does that achieve? And, I'm not sure on the 'storage room' idea for NPC mobile run shops. That's never how any other MUD does it... But after a moment of thinking, for a shop that has a limited supply of items that would actually work well enough while it contributes to realism. But most shops would have like the normal unlimited supply of whatever: like lanterns at the general store, or ... well, whatever would be sold. That would probably be generated by a script that spawns the item right there from the specific object prototype.
And I installed the Apache webserver, on the DV server. Looking at it now, I won't need too complex of redirection stuff - Apache can actually handle lots of that for me!
Really belated edit:
Your last edit made very little sense, if indeed you were referring to the way that I said "not an edit, but a non-doublepost"
But to the later one: Posts are supposed to be separate pieces of thought, not multiple ones thrown together, that's my way of seeing it.
pizza2004 - October 8, 2008 07:04 PM (GMT)
Yep, it would just automatically respawn items in the storage room, and then the mobile would go back and pick them up when they needed more, plus there would be certain things that only come about sometimes, and stuff that gets sold to the store would be stored back there sometimes. With bigger objects the merchant would just go back and get it for you when you purchase it. It really would help Dungeon Valley stand out, while providing more gameplay, because if they can sneak back in there, then they could steal certain items.
Edit: Well, half my reason for doing it is because I will inevitably not post for a day or two, and then you would have like twenty posts, and I would be behind. Not anytime soon hopefully though, got to go to next class, be right back.
Aßyll - October 8, 2008 07:09 PM (GMT)
Yes, the stealing part would be pretty good. First, we should let players be able to go back there easily, and have the mobs 'learn' that they need to protect their wares. At first, the mob would grab the player for just trying to walk there, or if the player gets in, the mob would physically throw them out. If you used the 'sneak' skill or hide or something, you could get away with it easily. But then, the mobs grow smarter, so they get the 'notice' ability to notice if players use sneak to make it past. Or they can install traps or locks to keep the stuff safer. It is an excellent idea!
pizza2004 - October 8, 2008 07:16 PM (GMT)
Yes, all good ideas, and the room thing is only for a building, I realize there are always a few exceptions, but as a general rule I think it is better to stick to having at least two public rooms in any PUBLIC building, but even buildings that aren't public should at least have two rooms, although I don't think I have to worry about that one.
Edit: You should hit the return key twice after any block of text, it just looks better, and it specifies that you are talking about something else now, that is how you do different topics in one post. But I am going to make the manual a PDF, it will probably be around 20 pages, and eventually it will have the picture of the guy standing on the mountain looking down on the valley as the cover picture. It will be so awesome it isn't even funny!
Aßyll - October 8, 2008 07:19 PM (GMT)
Okay, sounds okay overall.
So I'm setting up the Apache webserver now. But we need some html pages that can actually be accessed! Can you make some, or get someone to make some home pages for DV? I think we want it better than the simple dull black background and green text from the NM server.
pizza2004 - October 8, 2008 07:24 PM (GMT)
Well, the homepage is fine like that for now, but eventually we will need to make it better. So can you make it have different pages that it gets from the Webserver module, I want it to get them directly from it, not just some html pages that it saves.
Aßyll - October 8, 2008 07:30 PM (GMT)
That, I can probably jerry-rig up. I'll have a static html page for the homepage - which will have the normal links, then a link to the dynamic Who page, which will actually be hosted by the NM webserver, since Who is the only thing we really care about as of yet. We can easily add more later.
So, in the homepage, it has a link like this: <a href="dungeonvalley.game-host.org:81/who">Click here to see the Current who list!</a>
That will redirect the person who's viewing it to change to practically an entirely different site, because of the different port, (I hope..)
Then the Who page generated by the NM webserver can have links back to the homepage or whatever, or the viewer can just use the back button.
Pretty easy!
Okay then, Im gonna put the main page in as index.html, modified a bit, and then I will add in the favicon.ico (WOOOT!!) and the dv_info.html, and the motd.html
It'll work, I tell you!
Just look at dungeonvalley.game-host.org : it tells you itself!
pizza2004 - October 8, 2008 07:34 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't add the dv_info file, it is archaic I believe, and it has certain things that aren't meant for the public. I also don't think that the webserver should be on a different port, it would be much easier for the whole thing if it is on the same port. Oh, and what port is the webserver on right now?
Aßyll - October 8, 2008 07:39 PM (GMT)
The problem is, the default html port is supposed to go to the Apache webserver service. And 2 programs cant share the same port. SOooo, I changed the port on the NM webserver to somehting else - I'm trying 79 right now unsuccessfully.
[Edit] Hmm.. Trying to get onto the NM webserver (port 79) is successful through IE6, but Firefox apparently blocked it, saying the port isn't a normal webpage port (I know that! And why did you work for 6254 then??!). But the 3 ports are 79: NM webserver, 80: Default DV website, and 81: VNC java connect.
[/edit]
The normal port for the now-official DV web site though is the default port, you dont need to specify it to view it!! It's 80. Just go to the dv.game-host.org url!
pizza2004 - October 8, 2008 07:47 PM (GMT)
It isn't showing me anything, and did you see what I said about the manual a few posts back? I don't like all of this stuff, it is a pain. We need to get it up and running, and eventually it will do different things, for now I will just redirect dv.neejean.org to your address you made, but not right now. And then, eventually that will be the product page for Dungeon Valley on the Andersoft Games website.
Aßyll - October 8, 2008 07:52 PM (GMT)
the manual? ah right.. something about a manual for DV.. sure,... whatever.
And .. its not showing?... grr. Maybe it's because of the game-host.org url being blocked. I can add another one to something else.
And yes, that's what I had in mind, redirecting dv.neejean.org to the new dyndns name. I now have 3 domain names for it: abyll.game-host.org, dungeonvalley and dv
I can add another one, dv.<somethingelse>.org or com, to see if the host name matters.
pizza2004 - October 8, 2008 07:55 PM (GMT)
Well, I was actually trying to connect to dungeonvalley.gamehost.org, not dungeonvalley.game-host.org, sorry about that! Oh, and it seems like there are a lot of different Andersoft things out there already, I am looking into whether or not it is legal for us to use the name Andersoft Games.
Edit: Actually, as far as the VNC server, it doesn't need to be on port 81, because 79 is a restricted network port, and I still can't access it even when it is on 81, so you may as well set it back to how it was before.
Aßyll - October 8, 2008 08:04 PM (GMT)
okay, vnc javaconnect is back to 5800 default, and also NM webserver is back to 6254
pizza2004 - October 8, 2008 08:15 PM (GMT)
Okay, fine by me, although I did just mean VNC, I thought it might be a tad confusing.
Aßyll - October 8, 2008 08:20 PM (GMT)
no, i knew you meant the vnc. I just changed the NM server back to normal. It works better that way too.
Check it out, it works now!!!
Theres a homepage, slightly different now, that has links to the MOTD and the who list.
You have to just use the back button though, there isn't a link available.
pizza2004 - October 8, 2008 08:27 PM (GMT)
Good job! I am currently trying to find a way to make my own emulation profiles on the Xbox 360 to allow me to play Toejam & Earl III.
Aßyll - October 8, 2008 09:24 PM (GMT)
Yep, the teeny website is up, running, and working like a charm!
Uh, feel free to modify it and improve the design however you will. I changed the font smaller though; the first one was way too big.

pizza2004 - October 9, 2008 05:04 AM (GMT)
You know, I have tried Pandora, and I will honestly say that I don't like it. I like being in control, and it doesn't seem to work correctly if I switch tabs. I just wish that there were a viable alternative. Oh well, I will just live with it. So, I finally have it, we put the statues inside the Town Hall, what do you think? What statues should we have anyway? We would probably have one of you, one of me, and either one of Bret, and then one of Hakim and Hason together, or one of Bret, Hason, and Hakim all together. I think you should enter into a very tall room, with a sky light, and stairs around on the outside walls, then there is a library somewhere, a clock tower that is accessible, and basement, and meeting rooms, and offices, and more rooms. This is the single largest Building in the entire game, it may even have a chapel in it (completely up to you)! Imagine how awesome it will look when it is modeled! Oh, the secrets of the Town Hall, it is an adventure in and of itself. Of course there would be some secret tunnels, no huge building is complete without secret tunnels, and of course you can't see anyone use these tunnels so it is very hard to find them. Oh man, the town hall will be so awesome, it dwarfs even my house, possibly even your house! I forgot about your house, it might not be bigger than that, but if it is, imagine how immense it would be, I figure more like 300 rooms max instead of just 100, but this isn't any actual restriction, it is just supposed to help show you the extreme size of the Town Hall. Not only will it be fun to explore, it will be fun to create (in a way), imagine all the secret passageways that you could access, it would be so sweet, and it would just be the most beautiful building in the graphics based version.
I think that is all for now.
Edit: Here is the link to one of the most awesome things they have ever done with any Halo game,
XIM, although I still think shake the Wii Remote should be melee, because that would be way more awesome. But the thing about this is that it means we could do really awesome things with the Xbox 360, and of course play the original Banjo with the classic controller, and Banjo-Tooie Multiplayer Shooting mode with Wii remote! And Abyll, I don't know if even Metroid Prime 3 can beat that smoothing. Imagine the possibilities, the better graphics and that sort of stuff, plus the Wii Input methods, in this way you could even make games use the Wii Balance Board I would think! It is simply so awesome!
Aßyll - October 9, 2008 03:06 PM (GMT)
A: PLEASE FREAKING USE PARAGRAPHS!!!
*ahem... Now then*
OOhh, you have an xbox 360 now! So, thanks to Glovepie. we can have LOTS of fun with this! And the xbox 360 controller?? OH the fun you can have with it on a PC! (Can I borrow one sometime plz?)
But Cool! Yeah, it'd be worth it to get this, even against my grain of not liking to pay for stuff. Now if only it Were being produced.
[edit] After looking further through it, I read how to make our own! It requires a couple things to buy, and a couple things to fix together, and then some downloading and 'flashing' (uploading to a firmware based piece of hardware)
We need to buy the siliconlabs flashstick, a spare PS2 controller cable (or extension) And the unfortunate XFPS ps2->Xbox controller converter. But alas... the cost of the stick is 25, and the XFPS thing is about $80. Which stinks. But there are some deals I saw, looking on eBay, etc, where it might be slightly cheaper. But it would still be awesome to get and do... If only you would get Halo3,... or at least halo2 since i heard 3 turned out sorta bad.
I have some soldering and electronics repair skills, so I can handle that for us. And his program only handling Mouse+Keyboard input? bah, we can make a Gpie Script for that. So we absolutely could do this.. it'd just cost a lot.. that we probably would want to spend elsewhere. Or if you just buy it yourself, I'd still be glad to help with the soldering part.
[/edit]
Hmm, I really do like Pandora - it helps me get more music, music that I DO like because it's so smart; And I don't have any troubles with it - it works great in another tab or even window in Firefox, Or internet explorer, but I did read something about trouble in safari - If it's minimized or something, safari will freeze any scripts in the minimized window, so Pandora wouldn't run anymore.
[edit] Capitalizing... yeah, w/e..
pizza2004 - October 9, 2008 06:38 PM (GMT)
I will buy the XFPS part for sure, I could get it for like $50, but only if we do this. Oh, and I don't have any wired controllers though, although I might get one 'if'. I will probably get the wireless thing for the PC though.
Aßyll - October 9, 2008 06:53 PM (GMT)
$50 looks like a good deal - I Never found Anything under $75.
what wireless thing though? Oh, you mean the connector for a wireless 360 controller, right?
Well a couple wired and cheaper controllers would be good, anyways.
[part 2]
I will be entirely glad to help you put it together - I can do the soldering thing entirely - but I'm not too inclined to pay for any at all. Unless you count it as a rental fee for me borrowing a controller to play on my computer ^_^
pizza2004 - October 9, 2008 06:57 PM (GMT)
You would be borrowing THE controller, I would only have one wired one, so you could use that of course.
Sinilli2 - October 9, 2008 07:00 PM (GMT)
what are you guys talking about? all is see is a bunch of paragraphs.
*cool
Sinilli2 - October 9, 2008 07:02 PM (GMT)
uh... i have to go.
*cool
pizza2004 - October 9, 2008 07:02 PM (GMT)
Aßyll - October 9, 2008 07:03 PM (GMT)
A home-made accessory for an Xbox 360: A thing to allow input from a PC, instead of normal controllers, So we can use a keyboard and mouse, or Anything really!
It's awesome, but slightly costly. Estimated costs are $25 for a controller emulator (From the PC to a controller plug), and $80 ($50, according to pizza2004) for a controller converter (From the emulator box to the Xbox itself)
Aßyll - October 9, 2008 07:03 PM (GMT)
Stop being a double-post Nazi, pizza2004!
Sinilli2 - October 9, 2008 09:14 PM (GMT)
Yeah Pizza
where can i get one?
*cool
pizza2004 - October 10, 2008 07:15 PM (GMT)
Okay, everyone EXCEPT Abyll can double post, but please don't it is kind of annoying to have multiple two line posts. Abyll, you are not allowed to because of your high post count, you are not supposed to get more than me.
Aßyll - October 10, 2008 08:32 PM (GMT)
Why don't you just post more?
pizza2004 - October 11, 2008 01:57 AM (GMT)
Because I just don't have the time. I want to play Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts so much! It is going to be so awesome! Besides, I like to use as few posts as possible, if I just post over and over again on here, it will make it harder to keep from double posting on the Starry Heaven forum.
So, I am having builders block , I can't come up with any really good ideas for a more specific Town Hall design. So I figure that in the end we will have somewhere between two and three thousand rooms in the Valley, and eventually an ever expanding outside. But we need to work on the specifics of the Town Hall. I have asked Wii Moat, and he hasn't responded back yet, but maybe he will agree to work with me. If he does then I might allow him access to the secretive area, but that just means that I will change the password on it. Then eventually we will get it all designed and implement it into the game, in the graphics version the town hall will be visible all over the valley. It will be a truly beautiful spectacle, the likes unseen anywhere else in the Valley.
Aßyll - October 13, 2008 07:02 PM (GMT)
Sorry that you haven't seen me for the last while; My laptop's power cable has finally passed away, and my electronics resurrection skills are beyond it now (Or maybe strike three: It's out!) *nooo
Anyways, I am stuck to using lesser public computers or my family's desktop until the new ac adapter ships in ... from Hong Kong. It'll be here in about 10 days... *sigh
But I think that you're way overemphasizing the town hall - It's a generic small-town, small town hall. Not the St. Peter's Cathedral.
No, it's alright if you make it big and stuff, but "Big enough to be seen from anywhere in the valley, it's so giNORMOUS!" is just ridiculous. It definitely should only be 2 stories, and maybe 80 real rooms all together, like a normal building. But it's fine if you make it really pretty and stuff, like a Gothic Architecture, just not that ridiculously huge.
And building more May not be too great an idea - we may need to re-construct the entire object design on every room while we're developing the code further. We REALLY need to work on the codebase systems more!! I just can't because college life is really picking up for me; I'm actually needing to take time for math homework, and I'm already sorta behind for English. But we really need to work on Stats&Skills.
(Like I haven't said that enough... -_- )
